Mammograms & Diagnostic Services

Feel confident you'll receive accurate, timely results when you have a mammogram or other breast diagnostic test at Olmsted Medical Center (OMC). You'll appreciate our focus on your comfort and wellbeing.

Annual screening mammograms are the best test available for detecting early breast cancer. OMC aligns itself with the Society for Breast Imaging and the American College of Radiology in recommending annual screening mammograms beginning at age 40. If there is a history of breast cancer in your family, it is important to talk with your primary care provider about when you should start having mammograms. Finding problems early gives you the best chance of successful treatment.

When to See Your Primary Care Provider

If you have breast pain, changes, or other symptoms, contact your primary care provider to schedule a breast exam before you make a mammogram appointment. See your provider for a physical exam each year.

Schedule a Mammogram Only

You may not need a clinical breast exam (CBE) before your mammogram. Schedule a screening without a CBE if:

  • You don't have any symptoms of a potential problem, like pain or a lump.
  • Your most recent screening mammogram was more than twelve months ago.
  • You're 40 or older.
  • You’re not a patient participating in Sage, Minnesota's breast and cervical cancer screening program.
  • You've seen your primary care provider in the past two years.

To schedule your screening mammogram, call radiology scheduling at 507.292.7151.

3D Mammography

A mammogram is the best way to find breast cancer as early as possible. At OMC, you can take advantage of the latest equipment, including 3D mammography, or True Breast Tomosynthesis.

A regular mammogram takes a single image of the breast. A 3D mammogram takes multiple images from different angles. This means your radiologist will have a clearer image and you may need fewer tests.
